How do I know if I have lead paint?
If your home was built before 1978, there is a good chance that you have lead paint. According to the EPA, 2% of homes built between 1960 and 1977 have or had lead paint. That number jumps to 69% in homes built between 1940 and 1959. Eighty-seven percent of homes built before 1940 have or had paint that contains lead.
After 1978, the federal government banned its use in paints. Chances are good that any paint on your window sills, walls and other areas that was put on after then will not contain any lead. However, there may still be lead paint under other layers of paint in your home.
If you suspect there is lead paint in your house, you can find out for sure with a simple test. Kits can be purchased inexpensively from any hardware store, so you can test at home on your own. We perform lead paint removal in Chicago homes when lead paint is discovered and deemed a risk.
Dangers of Lead Paint
Lead was once a common additive in paint, but its use was restricted because of the health problems it can cause. Lead exposure can be especially dangerous for small children and unborn babies. Lead exposure symptoms are often hard to detect at first. They develop over time and can include weight loss, irritability, fatigue, developmental delays, learning difficulties and hearing loss. Children under six are especially at risk, but lead exposure can be unhealthy for people of all ages.
Lead Paint Removal Contractor Chicago Trusts
Not all lead paint needs to be removed in order to keep your family safe. The EPA considers painting over lead paint adequate abatement. However, if lead paint is peeling or flaking, it can become airborne. When this happens, flakes can be ingested and cause problems for you and your family. Additionally, surfaces that are touched often, such as door frames, window sills, stair railings and banisters should be treated, as these surfaces are subject to the wear and tear that makes lead paint dangerous.
If you have or suspect lead paint, do not attempt to strip it yourself. Do not sand lead paint, as this can make it easier for particles to be inhaled or ingested.
A qualified lead paint removal service is required for stripping lead paint from surfaces where it can endanger you and your family. Since 2003, BB Construction has been a licensed lead removal contractor. If you suspect dangerous lead in your home, contact us for a free quote and consultation
